Recent research by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has found that housebuilders miss targets for affordable homes in rural locations by 18 houses a day, with a separate report by the think-tank, the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) discovering that 6,270 rural households became homeless in 2016 (this being a small fraction of the wider 40 per cent rise in rough sleeping since 2010).
I don’t operate like I used to; the way my parents used to live is long forgotten, and the next generation have their own spin on life that in turn makes me look and feel positively outdated. But the world we live in isn’t keeping pace. I’m not talking about new technologies, the iPhone X or any other ethereal change; it’s our physical spaces that need a comprehensive reboot.

We find ourselves in a situation where housing is up there with fracking and windfarms in provoking the automatic response of no. In the situation we find ourselves in it has become crystal clear that leaving housing numbers to local councils and communities will not produce the number of houses that we need. It may deliver some, but nowhere near the number we need.
