Iceni Projects obtained support from London Borough of Barking and Dagenham for two major planning applications on Monday night (06 October 2014). Both applications will now be referred to the Greater London Authority (GLA) and are subject to GLA approval and the agreement of s106 agreements.
The first application, which will now be referred to the Secretary of State, will secure the redevelopment of the Abbey Retail Park, a key gateway site in Barking, to provide a 9,544 sq. m. Sainsbury’s superstore, a new riverside walkway, public open space, and a unique ‘History Wall’ to reflect Barking’s rich heritage.
Working with long-term client, Estates & Agency, the successful resolution caps off two years of extensive consultation with the Council and local community, and represents a multi-million pound investment into the local area, creating 450 new full and part-time jobs, and providing a significant boost to the ongoing regeneration of the town.
The second, a hybrid application for the mixed-use redevelopment of the eastern section of the Gascoigne Estate near Barking Town Centre, will secure 1,575 new residential units, 21,500 sq. m. of education space, 1,200 sq. m. office space, 1,400 sq. m. of community space, 1,850 sq. m. commercial space, and 1,355 sq. m. medical space.
The ambitious regeneration project, led by London Borough of Barking and Dagenham and East Thames Group is due to be completed in 2024. Delivered in phases, the first part is due to commence in spring 2015, and will see the completion of 421 new homes, and a medical centre.
Ian Anderson, Executive Director at Iceni Projects, said: “We are absolutely delighted with these two decisions, both are a culmination of a lot of hard work over a number of years, and have involved a number of our different teams including planning, transport and engagement coming together to deliver a successful outcome for each of our clients.”
