Iceni Projects, acting on behalf of Spiritbond, have secured planning permission from the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames for the development of a new six storey, 310 bedspace student accommodation on Kingston Road, New Malden. The new student accommodation will help meet the growing needs of Kingston University who, alongside the Authority, have identified that there is a current need of for 1,700 student bedspaces within the Borough.
The proposals entail the removal and replacement of an existing office building and public house. Iceni Projects were able to demonstrate that both the office building and public house were no longer financially viable, enabling the site to be promoted for an alternative land use.
The site has been proven to be highly sustainable, located in close proximity to convenience stores, with the proposals also benefitting from the introduction of a new bus service. That service will provide free transport for students to and from the University campuses. 136 cycle parking spaces will also be provided on site.
The scheme is a prime example of multi-disciplined team work within Iceni, with the company having successfully advised on matters relating to planning, community engagement, sustainability and transport.
Paul Webster, Director at Iceni Projects said: “This is a fantastic result, which will deliver excellent student accommodation for Kingston University within a well designed, architecturally stimulating, building. The decision follows extensive consultation with officers and members of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and the wider community. The collaborative approach has helped to produce a high quality scheme that will positively contribute to meeting the high demand for student accommodation within the Borough”.
